¿Quién Tiene La Razón?

Mexican writer/director Carlos Cuaron

Do you all remember a few months ago when Javier Bardem caught some heat from his fellow Spaniards for saying that they turn their backs on their compatrias once they make it big in Hollywood?

Well now, its director Carlos Cuarón’s turn. The Mexican director (and brother to Alfonso) has recently unleashed a shit storm after an interview with an Argentine newspaper quoted him as saying that “el mexicano no perdona el éxito.”

Not only that, the “Rudo y Cursi” director hinted at the fact that he thought los argentinos are culturally and intellectually superior to his fellow mexicanos.

What do you all think about Carlos’ statement? Does he deserve to be busted by the Mexican press? Or is he just saying what everyone already thinks?

…I’m from Mexico; whenever Salma Hayek comes to Mexico reporters are merciless in asking her foolish/gossipy stuff, instead of commenting on her accomplishments…Although I think he is half right (because he should have said “los medios de comunicacion mexicanos no perdonan el exito), he should have kept quiet, you know? some things are better left unsaid…and he really put his foot in his mouth with the comment about Argentinos, because there are ignorant as well as educated people in every culture…and he comes off as a fool, in my opinion, to make those statements when he is promoting a movie; not a good way to make friends in your own country…

Hi, I’m Mexico too and I have to say I do agree somewhat with what he is saying. I do not agree about the book store thing, that is just a very stupid thing to say in my opinion because its highly exagerated and can’t be taken seriously. However, as Ana Lucia said this isn’t the smartest thing to say in an interview and he will probably wont be one of the mexican press favourites.
About Salma Hayek… I think everybody gets what thye deserve, she has been nasty to the mexican press ever since she got famous in hollywood. I think its the latino rico thing, once you start feeling a bit superior then you are too good.
Its not as obvious as he stated but rather a conflicting role play. However, the mexican press loves the actors that hit it big and still are humble and actually do press when they are back home.

Argentinos all think they are superior to EVERYONE. Nothing new there.

Tiene razon. Pero se lo hubiera dicho a otro pais y no a los Argentinos, ellos no necesitan mas para hacerles la cabeza mas grande.

  5. [...] Lossip reports on the Spanish-language press: ‘The Mexican director (and brother to Alfonso) has recently unleashed a shit storm after an interview with an Argentine newspaper quoted him as saying that “el mexicano no perdona el éxito.”‘ [Mexico does not forgive success]. Furthermore, Cuarón appeared to imply that Argentines were culturally and intellectually superior to Mexicans. The Mexican press not happy. The original interview with Argentine newspaper La Razón is available online. [...]
